As I mentioned in the previous post, I’m a Computer Science student at Ghent University and that’s the main thing that keeps me busy. The city of Ghent is not my hometown, nor do I live there during the academic year. I commute daily from my hometown Sint-Niklaas to Ghent and back. There’s a very decent train connection between both cities and a 30 minute train ride is not that much to deal with.
My main field of interest is programming (mainly in JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C/C++ and PHP), algorithms, datastructures, machine learning and artificial intelligence. As I’m currently finishing the last year of my major, I’m working primarly on my thesis for the moment. It’s about figuring out a way to visually compare multiple metaproteomics datasets with each other. The goal of this project is to decrease the amount of time a biologist needs to spend visualizing, comparing and looking for differences between these datasets.
When I’m not busy with school, I spend my time mostly building applications that I somehow find interesting to develop or might help me in my daily life. One of the applications that I’ve spent many days developing and that I’ve redone from scratch (everytime using a different framework) is a custom CMS in which developers can build specialized apps and custom theme’s. I’m currently still using WordPress for this blog, but I’m planning to change that in the future (once my CMS is finally completely done). The goal of the project is to be as lightweight as possible (and thus providing minimal functionality in the basis) and to be completely customizable using extensions and make it possible for every user to completely set it up the way they want to. I’m a big fan of simulation games, and mostly Cities Skylines (my absolute favorite), Factorio and Transport Fever.
When I’m not busy doing anything of the things mentioned above, I watch some YouTube-videos (mostly LinusTechTips, Bitwit, Keralis, Jayz2Cents, etc) or go for a run outside.
